Harvey Weiner Obituary

Harvey Weiner, 82, of South Windsor, CT, devoted husband, beloved father, and adoring grandfather, passed away on March 28, 2024.

Born in Baltimore, MD, Harvey was the son of the late Sidney and Sophie Weiner.  After graduating from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.  He was a Registered Professional Engineer and spent over 36 years at Pratt & Whitney as a Design Engineer, Technical Team Leader and Knowledge Center Leader. He is listed as an inventor on 8 patents related to his work.

Harvey’s interest in solving technical problems was reflected in his enjoyment working with computers and electronics.  He was the manager of the “Ask BYTE” column staff, which answered questions on microcomputing in BYTE Magazine, an early microcomputer magazine.  Harvey also was the Executive Editor of and contributor to the computer magazine Circuit Cellar Ink from 1992 through 2001 and owned his own consulting business, MicroServices, Inc.  He was an active member of the Connecticut Computer Club for over 40 years. Harvey also was an avid amateur radio operator who spoke with individuals in over 175 countries. He was a past President of the Hartford Amateur Radio Club and a Lifetime member of the American Radio Relay League.

Harvey had an amazing sense of humor and regularly made people around him smile and laugh. He valued his many friends and enjoyed activities with them. He also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles in ink, listening to music, and building all kinds of electronics from RF spectrum analyzers to personal computers.

Most of all, Harvey loved his family and enjoyed spending time together.  Family vacations and time by the pool were among his favorites. He really could build or fix almost anything and used his skills and gifts to make his family’s lives more enjoyable and to help others. He especially loved spending time with his grandson Jake, and the joy and laughter on each of their faces made anyone watching smile.

Harvey is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Roberta, his son Stephen, daughter-in-law Robin, grandson Jacob Weiner of South Glastonbury, CT, and his daughter Janice Weiner of Bethesda, MD.  Harvey also is survived by his sister Sharon Henderson of Baltimore, MD, sister-in-law Sondra Berman and her husband Robert of Florida, and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will take place on Monday April 1st at 11AM at Temple Beth Sholom B’nai Israel followed by a burial at Beth Sholom Memorial Park in Manchester CT.
